Wild Mushrooms are in season
Sunday 20th May
One of the absolutely beautiful facets of eating seasonally is that all of a sudden what we may have historically considered an awful time of the year becomes a celebration……for example, who of us has really celebrated cold, damp weather?? Well celebrate we should as it is indeed WILD MUSHROOM SEASON and the earth’s floor has a bounty of delights! ……..
If you know where to look. It’s a clandestine affair, this wild mushroom harvesting and while some are happy to share the secrets of the illusive mushroom hotspots, others can get rather cagey which adds a bit of mystery to our little fungi friend that we find quite exciting.
Wild mushroom hunting in Europe is a very big deal and there are stories of brothers waging war over the secrets of mushroom hot spots. In parts of Italy it so popular that it is strictly controlled by local authorities who fine amateurs and professionals alike if they pick too many, protecting the environment and the maverick mushroom pickers from poisoning themselves. Mushrooming is a very important business for some and the bounty is worth keeping the secret for.
This Sunday Mic from Sirocco South and Jack and the Monty’s team have wild mushrooms for sale for those who aren’t in the know about where to find them or aren’t confident about which ones are safe.
A few things to remember if you do forage yourself is never eat anything you are not 100% sure about, always tap the mushrooms so those very important spores are left behind and secondly don’t take them all or there will be none left for next year.
Richard Kent has the last of the seasons fresh figs on the home grown site this Sunday and right beside him Sharron will have lemons, tamarillos and persimmons.
For the green thumb, Renew Fertilizers return this Sunday with their organic fertilizer – just in time for preparing those winter beds – and to add colour to your garden Bill Waldren joins us with his large range of bulbs including daffodils, tulips, lilies and irises. Sunday’s weather is set for a superb late season Autumn day, a bit chilly but no rain or wind on the horizon. And with an overflowing market… …we can’t wait to see you!
